The exodus of Black Catholics from the Church is a growing concern, with recent polls showing that only 54% of Black adults raised Catholic still identify as such. A Black listening session in Birmingham is set to address these issues and explore how the Church can better support this community. This conversation is especially timely, following recent calls by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) for greater inclusivity. Joining to discuss this are Brent Patterson of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Birmingham and Dr. Ansel Augustine, Assistant Director of African American Affairs for the USCCB. They discuss how events like this can help address the concerns of Black Catholics and foster a more welcoming environment. Additionally, they share what they believe are the most important steps the Church can take to reverse the trend of Black Catholics leaving the faith.
